A Green Card is the card confirming a foreign national’s status in the U.S. as a lawful permanent resident. By obtaining a U.S. Green Card, a lawful permanent resident is allowed live and work in the U.S. indefinitely, and with few restrictions. Green Card status is most often obtained by way of a family-based visa petition – such as one filed by a U.S. citizen spouse, an employment based visa petition, or by way of relief in removal (formerly deportation) proceedings, such as through a grant of asylum status, or “cancellation of removal”.
